That explains why the industry isn\u2019t just watching attacks on our democracy unfold: it\u2019s fueling them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The January 6th, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol was a violent effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election, but it was not an isolated event. The former president and his cronies spent months before the attack <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/12\/26\/us\/politics\/republicans-voter-fraud.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pushing voter fraud claims, filing baseless lawsuits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/07\/27\/us\/politics\/fake-electors-explained-trump-jan-6.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">colluding to deliver \u201cfake electors.\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Even after the attack, 147 congresspeople ignored our country\u2019s democratic values and clung to Trump\u2019s false narrative by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2021\/01\/07\/us\/elections\/electoral-college-biden-objectors.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">voting not to certify the election<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They\u2019ve become known as the \u201cSedition Caucus.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the January 6 attack, we\u2019ve seen <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brennancenter.org\/our-work\/research-reports\/finding-same-misinformation-anti-voter-lawsuits-and-anti-voter\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">election denial become a tool to advance voter suppression<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Extremist politicians are spreading misinformation about the 2020 election to give cover to their racist voting laws \u2014 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brennancenter.org\/our-work\/analysis-opinion\/5-egregious-voter-suppression-laws-2021\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and in some states, it\u2019s worked<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. At the same time, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.icnl.org\/usprotestlawtracker\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they are enacting \u201canti-protest\u201d laws<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in many cases authored almost word-for-word by Big Oil lobbyists. These laws are a win for right-wing extremists and a loss for democracy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Big Oil is donating huge sums to the Sedition Caucus and politicians stripping back our democratic rights. At the same time, industry-linked groups are backing efforts to block legislation with overwhelmingly popular electoral reforms, allowing Big Oil to grow their influence and profits. Not only did the Sedition Caucus deny the results of the 2020 election, they <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/heated.world\/p\/lawmakers-who-denied-bidens-victory\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also have a record of voting against climate policy 94% of the time and denying the scientific consensus of climate change<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. By comparison, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-022-32412-y\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a supermajority of Americans support strong climate policies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The watchdog organization CREW (Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington) is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizensforethics.org\/reports-investigations\/crew-reports\/this-sedition-is-brought-to-you-by\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tracking donations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from companies giving the most to the 147 congresspeople denying our elections. They uncovered that just six Big Oil PACs have donated more than $2.2 million to fuel the Sedition Caucus since the January 6 attack. Koch Industries, an oil corporation that is the second largest privately-held company in America, is at the top of the list at more than $1 million in PAC donations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But these donations are the tip of the iceberg. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1abcmHA9Lcy7nAESXzIKrGB_SHMMJ8d0vxtrf85vRu_4\/edit#gid=1316911435\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The industry has donated more than $13 million to fuel the Sedition Caucus this election cycle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when all its corporate PACs and large individual donations are counted. That includes $3.1 million to the National Republican Senatorial Committee, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220926194240\/https:\/\/shop.nrsc.org\/products\/still-my-president-100-cotton-tee-red\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which sells MAGA-branded T-shirts with the slogan \u201cSTILL MY PRESIDENT,\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and $5.4 million to the National Republican Congressional Committee, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220926194344\/https:\/\/www.nrcc.org\/2021\/02\/11\/nrcc-announces-deputy-and-vice-chairs-for-2022-cycle\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whose Deputy Chairs for the 2022 election cycle are all Sedition Caucus members<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The rest went straight to Sedition Caucus members, most of whom are running for re-election in November. \u201cShadow groups\u201d with fossil fuel ties have also spent big on the election, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2022\/sep\/23\/koch-bankrolls-election-denier-candidates\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">including the Koch-linked group Americans for Prosperity Action<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Fueling the politicians who are stripping back our democratic rights<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/planet4-usa-stateless\/2024\/12\/36f292e6-democracy-report-2.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greenpeace USA found<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that 22 companies involved with producing, transporting, or distributing fossil fuels donated $1.26 million to sponsors of state anti-protest bills in the last election cycle (2019-2020). Many of these bills are almost word for word copies of language provided by ALEC (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alecexposed.org\/wiki\/ALEC_Exposed\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the American Legislative Exchange Council<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), which has received millions of dollars from Big Oil. These bills threaten peaceful protesters with long-term imprisonment, felony charges, and unpayable fines at a time when civil disobedience remains a crucial tool for protecting our democracy and the environment. Some bills even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/04\/21\/us\/politics\/republican-anti-protest-laws.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">grant immunity to drivers who hit protestors with their car<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Big Oil\u2019s money is also funding politicians that are attacking our right to vote. During this election cycle, 8 fossil fuel companies have donated $778,000 to politicians who supported anti-voter legislation, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/accountable.us\/projects\/corporate-anti-democracy-database\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to Accountable.US<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Action.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These attacks on our democracy are fueled by disinformation, as well as corporate donations. Despite some fossil fuel companies having condemned the January 6 attack, the industry has a decades-long history of spreading disinformation that is not entirely separate from what we see now. The fossil fuel industry has funded <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2021\/01\/16\/oil-industry-election-climate-denial-stop-steal\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">groups involved with planning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the \u201cStop the Steal\u201d rally, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmog.com\/2021\/02\/16\/climate-deniers-messages-support-capitol-insurrection\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or whose senior personnel promoted the rally online<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in the past.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Blocking popular electoral reforms<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Special interests have an enormous amount of political power in the United States. Industries like Big Oil can and do spend astronomical amounts to influence elections, often with poor disclosure practices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problem is now worse than ever: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.senate.gov\/news\/release\/whitehouse-blasts-republican-blockade-of-the-disclose-act-\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">secretive spending has gone up by 20 times and billionaire spending has multiplied by 70 since 2006<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Yet, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2018\/05\/08\/most-americans-want-to-limit-campaign-spending-say-big-donors-have-greater-political-influence\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">national poll showed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that Americans in both parties do not want billionaires buying our elections. To the contrary, there is overwhelming support for reeling in unchecked political giving and influence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So why hasn\u2019t Big Oil\u2019s political influence been reeled in? The blame lies in part with the Koch family\u2019s vast political network. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/news-desk\/inside-the-koch-backed-effort-to-block-the-largest-election-reform-bill-in-half-a-century\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to The New Yorker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Koch-run advocacy group Stand Together has coordinated closely with Republican leadership to oppose electoral reform, even when it was supported by conservative voters. These groups decided to ignore the will of the American people by plotting to block the Freedom to Vote Act: John R. Lewis Act <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(originally titled the For the People Act)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a landmark electoral reform bill, earlier this year. More recently, the Chamber of Commerce and the Heritage Foundation, which have received funding from fossil fuel companies, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/news\/2022\/09\/with-deadlocked-vote-on-dark-money-disclose-act-fails-to-clear-senate\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opposed the DISCLOSE Act<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that would have required increased transparency into political donations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The Fossil Fuel Industry is trying to suppress the power of the people and silence our voices. But we won\u2019t stop fighting.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Big Oil\u2019s support for the insurrection caucus, anti-democracy politicians, and secretive political spending follow a broad pattern of stoking attacks on the rights of average Americans. Their support feeds into racist voter suppression and the spread of dangerous disinformation that undermines the fabric of our democracy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What we must do:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b><i>Vote on November 8 (or sooner, if your state has early voting).<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The good news is that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/3610753-threats-to-democracy-top-list-of-issues-facing-us-poll\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent polls have found that the threat to American democracy is one of the top concerns of likely midterm voters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Whatever our color, background, or zip code, we must come out in droves to vote for new leaders who will protect our freedom to vote and pass laws that will enable progress on our climate goals. Now\u2019s the best time to make <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vote.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a plan to vote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and encourage your family and friends to do the same.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b><i>Continue pushing for strong democracy reforms at the state and federal levels<\/i><\/b><b>.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> That includes rolling back voter restriction laws and pushing for pro-democracy reforms. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b><i>Counter disinformation.<\/i><\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We must continue to fight back against disinformation by educating ourselves and one another, and, even more importantly, holding Big Oil accountable for decades of misleading the public.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With more than 70% of Americans concerned about the climate crisis, Big Oil CEOs stand to gain the most from drowning out our voices.
