But the truth is, more than 2.7 million people in California <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fractracker.org\/a5ej20sjfwe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Setback3200Summary_FracTracker_12.21.21_nomaps.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">live within less than a mile of an oil or gas well<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For many, especially Latine\/Latinx and other BIPOC communities, when they look out the window of their homes, schools and hospitals, they see oil rigs bobbing up and down a few feet away, extracting oil day in and day out. Kern County is the epicenter of extraction in California, with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/earthjustice.org\/features\/buffer-zones-oil-drilling-california-neighborhoods\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over 70%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the state\u2019s oil and gas wells. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/quickfacts\/kerncountycalifornia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kern County is also over half Latine\/Latinx<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While other states have enacted buffer zones between homes and oil and gas wells, California has lagged in regulating the industry. Instead, what we are seeing in California are \u201csacrifice zones,\u201d Black, Latine\/Latinx, Indigenous, and low-income neighborhoods that are \u201csacrificed\u201d to drilling in California. For example, the childhood asthma rate for Kern County is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lung.org\/research\/sota\/city-rankings\/states\/california\/kern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the state average, while other health complications, like cancer, preterm births, and respiratory illnesses are also more common. Nalleli has now been cancer free for one year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>A move in the right direction<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this episode of Planeta G, Juan Flores from the Center on Race, Poverty, &amp; the Environment takes us into Kern County to show us what oil extraction sites next to schools and homes look like. He also discusses how communities are fighting for their rights to a safe, healthy future\u00a0 and the steps California is taking to create more protection between fossil fuel sites and communities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a long-anticipated move against California\u2019s oil industry, Governor Newsom and his administration<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2021-10-21\/newsom-administration-issues-new-proposed-oil-drilling-buffer-zone-rules\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> released a new proposal for a 3,200-foot buffer zone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between new oil and gas wells and sensitive locations like homes, schools, and hospitals last October.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, under the proposed rule, existing wells would be allowed to remain close to neighborhoods, with some protections put in place, such as installing monitoring equipment and containment systems, aimed to reduce the health risks to nearby residents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But this is not the end of the road.
