Using music as a catalyst for change is nothing new. Religion has gospel, Republicans have country, and social justice has long been associated with hip-hop. Is heavy metal the new sound of the environmental movement? <\/span><\/p>\n

Think you can’t find environmental messages in metal? Think again. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Oh, so you think all of us greens listen to Phish nonstop and foam over the Grateful Dead? Well yes, <\/span>we kind of do<\/span><\/a>. But some of us also love to rock out to uncompromising blast beats and pummeling snares! Just because you can\u2019t understand the lyrics doesn\u2019t mean they do not hold a profound message for change, a critique of the status quo, or a call to action.<\/span><\/p>\n

The following list is a snapshot into enviro-metal \u2014 from the more funk and jazz inspired, to beautifully cacophonous grindcore, you\u2019ll want to add this to your playlist. Or at least share it with the metal head in your life.<\/span><\/p>\n

10. WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM \u2014 The Old Ones Are With Us (2017)<\/strong><\/p>\n

We start off with some black metal as lush as the Pacific Northwest scenery the band hails from. Introspective and dark, this is an ode to the beauty of cyclical nature as mystical as it is poetic.<\/p>\n

9. FAITH NO MORE \u2014 We Care A Lot (1985)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a hook that\u2019ll get stuck in your head. The oldest entry on the list, San Francisco\u2019s funk-rap-metal-alternative ensemble manages to mesmerize with the first song on their debut album, the eponymous \u201cWe Care A Lot\u201d. The band immediately sets the tone and tells us that they are indeed part of the <\/span>solution<\/span><\/a>! <\/span><\/p>\n

8. VEKTOR \u2014 Dying World (2011)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Shrieking thrash metal has never been so urgent. Arizona\u2019s Vektor will blow your head off while denouncing pollution caused by greedy fossil fuel companies.<\/span><\/p>\n

Standout line: \u201cSlashing and burning, crushing and drilling, <\/i><\/b>extinction is coming, the oil keeps spilling<\/i><\/b>. <\/i><\/b>Business as usual while toxins are killing<\/i><\/b>. <\/i><\/b>Destroying the land that our waste keeps on filling.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<\/lite-youtube>\n

7. DEVIN TOWNSEND \u2014 Canada (2001)<\/strong><\/p>\n

From his earth-themed album, <\/span>Terria<\/span><\/i>, Devin Townsend delivers a beautiful and \u201cintrospective\u201d ode to his homeland with this subdued prog masterpiece.<\/span><\/p>\n

Standout line: \u201cIt\u2019s oil, it\u2019s wheat, it\u2019s soil, it\u2019s meat, <\/i><\/b>it\u2019s beef!<\/i><\/b><\/a>\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<\/lite-youtube>\n

6. TESTAMENT \u2014 Greenhouse Effect (1989)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Released as the second single from their third album, prolific California thrash legends Testament make no qualms in their call to stop the devastation of <\/span>South America\u2019s rainforests<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

5. ATHIEST \u2014 Mother Man (1991)<\/strong><\/p>\n

A layered and complex jazz-influenced piece that would make Alice and John Coltrane proud, \u201cMother Man\u201d starts off the sophomore album of Florida\u2019s elusive virtuosos Atheist. If you manage not to let the angular guitars and disproportionate time signature changes overwhelm you, you\u2019ll surely come back for more.<\/span><\/p>\n

4. NAPALM DEATH \u2014 On the brink of Extinction (2009)<\/strong><\/p>\n

We\u2019re getting into really heavy territory now. Birmingham, England\u2019s grindcore veterans Napalm Death renowned history of ecological, progressive, and anti-capitalist views are reinforced on the furious \u201cOn the Brink of Extinction\u201d. Released on their thirteenth studio album, the track explores the possibility of an impending sixth mass extinction. <\/span><\/p>\n

Standout line: \u201c<\/i><\/b>Will we avoid a natural selection?<\/i><\/b>
\n<\/i><\/b>Do we have the right to survive the failures?<\/i><\/b>
\n<\/i><\/b>Nature, it’s force – the scales unbalanced<\/i><\/b>

3. GOJIRA \u2014 Toxic Garbage Island (2008)<\/strong><\/p>\n

The epitome of the environmental metal band, France\u2019s Gojira has carved its place among the scene\u2019s elite spokespeople with songs that speak for themselves such as \u201cGlobal Warming\u201d and \u201cOcean Planet\u201d. \u201cToxic Garbage Island\u201d takes the cake thanks to its ever-pressing message of <\/span>ocean plastic pollution<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. CATTLE DECAPITATION \u2014 Manufactured Extinction (2015)<\/strong><\/p>\n

San Diego\u2019s premier animal rights vegetarians have been bulldozing their way into our hearts with their frenzied mixture of technical death metal and grindcore since their studio debut \u201cHomovore\u201d in 2000. \u201cManufactured Extinction\u201d tackles loss of biodiversity, runaway <\/span>climate change<\/span><\/a>, and even channels Fukuyama\u2019s ideal of the end of human sociopolitical evolution discussed in his influential book \u201cEnd of History and the Last Man\u201d. The overarching pessimism is delightfully juxtaposed when the chorus reminds the listener that they can be the change they want to see.<\/span><\/p>\n

1. KRAFTWERK \u2014 Radioactivity (1991, re-release)\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Not metal you say? The fathers of electronic music may not write rock\u2019n\u2019roll, but I can\u2019t think of a more deserved spot for number one song. Originally released in 1975, the re-release includes in its lyrics more recent disasters that serve as a prime example for an updated call to <\/span>denuclearization<\/span><\/a>. In some sort of meta sense, this electro-pop song is the most metal thing you\u2019ll ever hear. <\/span><\/p>\n
