A new report from Greenpeace and Oil Change International outlines the financial and reputational risks related to three proposed tar sands pipelines including legal challenges, opposition from Indigenous and local communities, threats to drinking water and economic vulnerability.<\/span><\/p>\n

Three major new tar sands pipeline projects are proposed: Kinder Morgan\u2019s Trans Mountain Expansion, TransCanada\u2019s Keystone XL and Enbridge\u2019s Line 3 expansion.<\/p>\n

This report is written for banks, their institutional shareholders, and for those financial institutions considering financing or arranging finance \u2013 through the purchase or underwriting of corporate bonds or shares \u2013 the construction and operation of any of the proposed tar sands pipelines.<\/p>\n

It outlines the financial and reputational risks related to all three proposed tar sands pipelines including legal challenges, opposition from Indigenous and local communities, threats to drinking water and economic vulnerability. We make a number of recommendations for potential pipeline financiers and we suggest questions for bank investors to ask to understand whether the various risks are being adequately assessed, mitigated, and managed.<\/p>\n

This report was researched and written by Greenpeace UK, Greenpeace Canada, Greenpeace USA and Oil Change International.
