President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has\u00a0recognised the risks climate change poses, and\u00a0the need for action: \u2018Indonesia understands the\u00a0necessity of doing its part to face the urgent\u00a0global challenge of combating climate change. As a\u00a0developing country, and an archipelago of 17,000\u00a0islands, our people face the brunt of impact of\u00a0climate change.\u2019<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Norwegian government\u2019s pledge of $1\u00a0billion aids President SBY\u2019s progressive agenda\u00a0and ambition to end deforestation.The deal\u00a0includes a two-year moratorium on allocation of\u00a0further peatlands and natural forests for sector\u00a0expansion, as well as a review of the land held by\u00a0companies in existing concessions.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

A strong moratorium is a critical step toward\u00a0implementing a meaningful low-carbon\u00a0development plan. Greenpeace is calling for\u00a0immediate protection of all peatlands and a\u00a0temporary halt on all further natural forest\u00a0clearance not only in new areas, as currently\u00a0planned, but also existing concession areas.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In order for Indonesia to meet its express\u00a0ambitions not to be \u2018locked into a growth mode\u00a0that is unsustainable for our, and the world\u2019s,\u00a0environment\u2019 it is clear that sectors such as pulp\u00a0and palm oil must \u2018shift to a less carbon-intensive\u00a0development model\u2019.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

For human development to become truly\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>sustainable, the close link between economic\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>growth and greenhouse gas emissions needs\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>to be severed.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
