of all? Commercial deep sea mining operations<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>Greedy corporations are champing at the bit to set up commercial&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/deep-sea-mining-the-new-bad-guy-in-town\/\">deep sea mining operations<\/a><strong>.<\/strong>&nbsp;This destructive practice will be used to extract finite deposits of cobalt, nickel, and other minerals used in batteries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>While there\u2019s no question that the green energy future we\u2019re building will require batteries,&nbsp;<strong>we don\u2019t need to destroy the seafloor through a new extractive industry to build that future<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 especially if companies recycle more, use less, and build technology to last, all of which is the current trend in battery R&amp;D investment.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Deep Sea Mining should scare you, too<\/h2>\n\n<p>Leveling the ocean floor with heavy machinery to extract minerals will&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/news\/72847\/\">destroy ocean life in their path and threaten marine biodiversity<\/a>&nbsp;by spewing waste into the water column and on the seabed floor, disrupting deep-sea ecosystems, food chains and the carbon cycle, potentially even exasperating the climate crisis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>These creatures might be creepy, but do they really deserve to be dodging these deep sea mining operations? At Greenpeace, we think not.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The practice of commercial deep sea mining is only just beginning.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p><strong>We\u2019re up against a&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/jun\/30\/deep-sea-mining-could-start-in-two-years-after-pacific-nation-of-nauru-gives-un-ultimatum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>2 year deadline<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;to stop international law from opening the oceans to this new destructive practice. And right now, deep sea mining interests are pitching themselves to corporations like&nbsp;<strong>Ford Motor Company<\/strong>&nbsp;as a quick and easy new market for minerals needed to produce batteries for electric vehicles and renewable storage.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sign the petition asking Ford to commit to never using deep sea mining as a source for its clean battery needs.<\/h3>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/engage.us.greenpeace.org\/OnlineActions\/AwynFf97DEGcVSshWqvZkw2?utm_source=website&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=forddsmadvocacy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">take action<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More than 80 percent of our oceans are still unmapped, unobserved, and unexplored.
