(April 2, 2026 ) \u2014 <\/strong>Despite its stated commitment to improving Americans\u2019 health, the Trump administration has repeatedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/article\/how-the-trump-administrations-embrace-of-oil-gas-and-chemical-industry-interests-will-endanger-childrens-health\/\">favored the petrochemical sector<\/a> while weakening basic safeguards that protect people from toxic chemicals, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2026\/mar\/27\/trump-epa-cancer-rules-formaldehyde\">weakening formaldehyde cancer standards<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/show\/epa-rollbacks-on-pollution-limits-could-drive-up-health-care-costs-advocates-warn\">rolling back air pollution monitoring requirements<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/policyintegrity.org\/tracking-regulatory-rollbacks\">reducing enforcement of environmental laws<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>In response to the Trump Administration\u2019s <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/trump-admin-announces-major-steps-countering-big-pharma-and-microplastics\"><strong>announcement<\/strong><\/a><strong> of its STOMP program to \u2018systematically target\u2019 microplastics, Sybil Bullock, Greenpeace USA Senior Oceans Campaigner, said: \u201c<\/strong>Microplastics are polluting our bodies, damaging human cells and tissues. While we need microplastics out of our water, the Trump administration&#8217;s announcement of more research is not leadership, it&#8217;s more of the same\u2014another gift to the very industries that are making Americans sick. The science is clear: plastics contain over 16,000 chemicals, many of which are harmful to human health. Adding microplastics to a list without committing to take action puts present and future generations at risk. The only way to Make America Healthy Again is to cut plastic production and eliminate hazardous chemicals from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/greenpeaceusa\/reel\/DVhuCYYlJUU\/\">food packaging<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.times-herald.com\/online_features\/health_and_wellness\/how-hidden-plastic-in-your-daily-life-is-harming-your-health\/article_b88b770d-fa49-5a62-aa4c-00f1db8b0381.html\">everyday products<\/a>. They cannot claim to prioritize health while expanding oil and gas\u2014the same systems fueling plastic production and chemical exposure.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Bullock continued:<\/strong> \u201cEvery day, roughly 10,000 babies are born in the United States \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2024\/feb\/27\/microplastics-found-every-human-placenta-tested-study-health-impact#:~:text=tested%20in%20study-,This%20article%20is%20more%20than%202%20years%20old,the%20plastics%20could%20cause%20harm.\">already at risk of exposure to plastics and harmful chemicals<\/a> before they even take their first breath. No one should have to live like this, exposed from the very start of life with no way to opt out. Health officials and advocates across the political spectrum know these exposures damage our health throughout childhood and every stage of life. Microplastics have been found in the air we breathe, the food we eat, in our organs, and in our blood. This is unacceptable \u2014 Americans should not be treated as collateral damage for the oil and gas industry\u2019s profits.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Fenceline communities, those living next to oil, gas, and petrochemical facilities, bear a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=udtALPkIMME\">disproportionate burden of toxic pollution<\/a> and related health risks. Yet they continue to face the threat of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/lng-companies-hail-trump-decision-lift-freeze-export-permits-2025-01-22\/\">industry expansion<\/a>, as recent federal actions have accelerated permitting, increased drilling approvals, and fast-tracked new oil and gas infrastructure projects.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Jo Banner, Co-Founder and Co-Director of The Descendants Project, said<\/strong>: \u201cPlastic is like a fire raging through a building. And as Dr. Leo Trasande reminded everyone, \u201cWe know enough to act.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>We don\u2019t need a STOMP program to measure, target, and remove microplastics in our bodies; we need policies that STOP them from getting there in the first place. Microplastics don\u2019t appear out of nowhere; they come from the fossil fuel-based products that inundate our daily lives.
