Sierra Club of Hawai’i and Greenpeace USA host two screenings and discussions examining risk LNG poses to local communities<\/em><\/p>\n\n

HONOLULU, HAWAI\u02bbI<\/strong> (September 11, 2026) \u2013 As Hawai\u02bbi faces growing interest from the fossil fuel industry and potential plans to expand liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure and exports, a new documentary is bringing the human and environmental costs of fossil fuel development into focus.<\/p>\n\n

GASLIT, a documentary featuring Academy Award-winning actor and activist Jane Fonda, sold out its free screening\u00a0 at the Honolulu Museum of Art <\/strong>on September 11th from 7:00 p.m – 9:00 p.m. HST.<\/p>\n\n

A second screening is scheduled for September 12th, at Patagonia Hale\u02bbiwa from 6:30 p.m \u2013 9:30 p.m HST. This showing will also include a silent auction benefiting the L\u0101hui Foundation’s Post-Flood Recovery Efforts.<\/p>\n\n

Following both screenings, a panel discussion with Wayne Chung Tanaka, Executive Director, Sierra Club of Hawai\u02bbi; P\u0101honu Coleman, youth plaintiff in the historic Navahine climate lawsuit and settlement,<\/strong> and Melanie Oldham, Executive Director of Better Brazoria Clean Air & Water<\/strong>, will take place. <\/p>\n\n

These screenings come as communities across the country continue to push back against new fossil fuel infrastructure and question whether LNG expansion is compatible with a safe climate future. For Hawai\u02bbi, the conversation is particularly important as the state works toward a clean energy transition while facing pressure from fossil fuel interests.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cWe know the threats that importing this planet-killing fossil fuel will pose to our pocketbooks, public safety, public health, and local environment, \u201d said Sierra Club Executive Director, Wayne Chung Tanaka. \u201cThis film helps us to understand the deep harms inflicted on those living on the other end of the LNG pipeline.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Since 2023, the U.S. has become the world\u2019s largest exporter of LNG, and oil and gas companies are simultaneously fueling a massive boom in plastics production, doubling down on petrochemicals to secure their long-term future. GASLIT is both a call to action and a reflection on the decades-long struggle between the survival of frontline communities and fossil fuel encroachment.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cGASLIT is a visual representation of the people fighting tooth and nail for their lives every day in Texas and Louisiana, but their stories resemble that of so many others across the country,\u201d said Katie Camosy, Director of GASLIT. \u201cWe want people to support the folks in the film, and we also want them to leave the theater ready to talk to their neighbors. We hope they consider what polluting industries might be doing in their own backyards.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Although Hawai\u02bbi has long been recognized for its leadership on clean energy, the state remains a potential target for expanding LNG infrastructure and markets throughout the Pacific. Advocates have been raising concerns that a recent LNG proposal for O\u02bbahu could lock communities into decades of additional pollution and dependency on imported fossil fuels, while putting public health, climate goals, local ecosystems, and the local economy at risk. <\/p>\n\n

In GASLIT, Academy Award-winning actor and activist Jane Fonda embarks on a road trip through Texas oil fields and Gulf Coast communities, meeting the people who are fighting back against the oil and gas extraction boom. This boom, which has led to the United States becoming the world\u2019s biggest liquefied \u201cnatural\u201d gas (LNG) exporter, is also fueling a massive expansion of plastics production, as fossil fuel companies double down on petrochemicals to secure their future.
