Did you know…?

Renewable energy covers 12.1% of the whole electricity demand in Japan

Growth of renewable energy over the 3 years up to 2014 was equal the power supplied by 4.7 nuclear reactors

Japan ranks 2nd place across the whole world in the growth of photovoltaics

Renewable energy capacity in Japan has dramatically increased since 2012

Triggered by the start of Feed-in-Tariff (FIT) laws in July 2012, renewable energy power generation has been experiencing a strong upsurge in Japan.

In particular, installation of photovoltaic-based stations has dramatically expanded, which in 2014 pushed Japan into the second place in the world for growth of photovoltaics, right behind China.

Renewable energy growth: reliable energy source in Japan

Graph: Japanese energy mix in FY2011 and in FY2014. data from Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry

Comparing the energy mix from FY2011 to FY2014, renewable sources (not including large hydro) have increased by 29.1 TWh in 3 years. (29,100,000,000kWh). This corresponds to the power which would be generated by 4.7 nuclear power reactors. As this shows, renewables have become more and more of a reliable energy source.

It is also worth noting that the energy consumption in FY2014 itself has decreased by 4.7% (45.1TWh) compared to FY2011. This is a result of all the effort by citizens, corporations and other electricity consumers to make energy saving.

While we continue to save energy, we can decrease power supplied by nuclear and fossil fuels and shift Japan into 100% renewable supply. We can make an Energy Revolution in Japan - 100% Renewable Japan -  reality by increasing renewable energy and decreasing dependency on nuclear and fossil fuels.

Greenpeace global scenario toward 100% renewable

Greenpeace’s Energy Revolution Japan project aims to make Japan 100% renewable by 2050. The project is based on Energy Revolution Scenarios published by Greenpeace International in September 2015.

This scenario shows that not only the power generation sector, but also both the manufacturing and transport sectors can be covered by 100% renewable.
