What is a SLAPP?

A Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation (SLAPP), is a legal tactic to bury nonprofits, activists, journalists, and other public advocates in legal fees, drain their resources, and ultimately silence dissent. These abusive lawsuits are a key weapon used by the oligarchs and corporate polluters against those advocating for a green, just future.

There is a global surge in bullying lawsuits that weaponise the legal system to shut down dissent. Like Energy Transfer’ SLAPP in North Dakota against three Greenpeace entities that returned a judgment of US$345million – every SLAPP, regardless of the defendant, is an attack on everyone who believes in the power of free speech and the right to peaceful protest.

We’re taking a Big Oil bully to court

Greenpeace International is taking Big Oil bully Energy Transfer to court in the Netherlands with a landmark anti-SLAPP case to pursue justice under Dutch and EU law. The pipeline company has been waging abusive lawsuits against Greenpeace International and Greenpeace in the US for nearly a decade.

This anti-SLAPP lawsuit – invoking the European Union’s new directive for the first time – sends a clear message to every bully, billionaire, and corporate polluter: your era of intimidation is over, and your tactics of fear will no longer work.

They want us — and all climate activists — to be scared by their corporate intimidation tactics. But their tactics won’t succeed. Netherlands-based Greenpeace International’s landmark case is already underway. It’s time to resist!
