Community Engagement Internship (DC)

The Community Engagement Intern will work on engaging volunteers in our remote volunteer groups. The Supporter Mobilization Team has found that many people want to take action to protect the environment, but don’t know how. The person in this role will help guide new potential volunteers into our existing volunteer groups, and support volunteers who are already working on Greenpeace campaigns.

Overview of where position fits within greater organization
The intern will work directly with the Community Engagement & Training Specialist, and the Supporter Mobilization team staff. This internship will be focused on engagement and building volunteer communities.

Project Details
This is a communications-heavy role – which will include posting on social media channels, reaching out to volunteers 1-1 and through broadcast channels like SMS or Slack. Their goal will be to make sure each volunteer is clear on their role and knows how they can contribute to protecting our climate and our planet.

Expected Project Deliverables
The intern will post regular updates and questions in our volunteer groups’ social media pages and Slack channels
They will generate ideas on how we can better communicate our mission and values to Greenpeace volunteers, including our equity and inclusion principles
On a weekly basis, they will engage with Greenpeace supporters through text messages and phone calls.
At the completion of the internship, the intern will present to their supervisor and other team members on their learning over the 11 weeks, including suggestions for further development of the volunteer engagement team.

Skills Required
A strong commitment to the environmental movement, and a desire to engage as many people as possible in the work of protect our climate & communities
Self-directed and motivated
Strong written, oral and interpersonal communication skills that can inspire and motivate people to take action
Ability to work independently but collaboratively in a fast-paced, constantly-changing environment

Preferred Skills
Grassroots organizing experience
Experience running trainings and conferences using web-based presentation tools
Experience supporting Non-Violent Direct Actions (NVDA), or a strong desire to learn how to support them
Ability to speak Spanish a plus, but not required
Experience with digital organizing, through social media, email, SMS, or other engagement tools

Skills Intern Will Gain Post-internship
The intern will gain a deep understanding of distributed organizing principles and best practices. They’ll learn how to use social media, email, and SMS to engage potential volunteers, and move supporters up an engagement ladder. This internship will prepare them for future work in grassroots, distributed, or digital organizing. They will also leave with a presentation and write up of their project with the plastics campaign that they can use in the future.
