Greenpeace needs a leader for our Democracy work who understands why social, environmental and economic injustice are sides of the same pyramid. Who can make the complicated and fractured seem simple and unified. Who can draw on creative campaign and communications skills to work alongside other organizations and drive new and innovative work that inspires our members to resist the assault on democracy and reclaim our power as the electorate.
The Democracy Campaigner is responsible for the delivery of Greenpeace work as part of the Democracy Initiative coalition. They will take responsibility for project leading Greenpeace teams in the development and delivery of work to further the goals of the democracy work working with a coalition of partner organizations from the environmental, labor, democracy, and civil rights movements.
1. In conjunction with the Deputy Campaigns Director, develop and execute a work plan in line with both short term and long term goals for the campaign.
-Participate in strategic planning of the campaign
- Facilitate inspiring creative ideas generation
-Facilitate strategic and tactical decision-making on a day-to-day basis
- Coordinate information flow within campaign, between departments and across the global organization
- Build alliances and/or support relationships with constituencies identified in strategic planning
- Maintain a working knowledge of political, legislative, regulatory and economic framework relevant to the campaign
- Coordinate and conduct research and analysis to further campaign goals
- Maintain a working knowledge of climate and energy issues and be able to present the information to a variety of audiences in language they can understand
- Develop or assist in the development of written materials
- Write or assist in writing press releases and in planning media strategies.
- Act as spokesperson for campaign to the media and develop pro-active relationship with media
- Represent Greenpeace and the campaign at public events, grassroots activists groups, local citizens/town forums and the environmental community at large.
- Keep director up to date on the campaign and recommend changes in strategies or tactics if necessary
2. Manage a sub-component of a campaign or project independently, with guidance from the Deputy Campaigns Director, including leading & managing a cross programmatic team, and generally ensuring good communications between the sub project team and other GPUS teams or departments as well as other GPUS offices.
3. Lead engagement, including negotiations, with stakeholders such as government agencies and corporations
4. Work with the Social Media Strategist to plan and implement social media output strategies on a variety of Greenpeace’s platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and Instagram
5. Write compelling email copy that engages Greenpeace’s over one million supporters to take action or donate money based on the identified campaign strategy;
6. Manage campaign budgets as assigned by the Deputy Campaigns Director
7. Mentor junior team members to teach the fundamental skills of Greenpeace campaigning.
8. Direct, organize and participate in non-violent direct action events to support the campaign goals and national objectives.
9. Contribute to building and maintaining a strong, diverse and inclusive campaign team
10. Perform other job related duties as requested or assigned.
- Strong project leadership and project planning skills to enable the delivery of projects to time, to budget and to deliver clear objectives
- Strong communication skills, both written and oral
- Proven ability to develop and implement campaigns
- Functional knowledge of online organizing platforms (e.g, Convio, Salsa, Blue
State Digital)social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter and SMS;
- Ability to think creatively and innovate
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
- Ability to travel
- Leadership ability
EXPERIENCE AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
- A minimum of seven years experience in campaigning, on related issues
- A bachelors degree and/or equivalent experience in a relevant field
- Proven ability to work both independently and in close coordination with a team
- Well-rounded with ability to work with a variety of people and groups
- Proven experience in directing a project from conception to completion and clear track record in overseeing effective campaigns
- Strong skills and experience in public speaking/lobbying and/or organizing people around an issue
- Basic online and specifically social media skill
- A background in political communications
- Commitment to non-violence as a means of affecting change and supportive of non-partisan approaches to advocacy
- Willing to travel as required
