Latest News: Activists Take Action at Coal Plant
The Coal Free Future Tour
We're on a one-month tour to support East Coast communities fighting coal plants in their region. America's oldest and dirtiest coal-burning power plants are destroying communities, poisoning our air and water, making our families sick and driving global warming. It's time to shut them down.
The tour began in Wilmington, NC, and plans to stop in Philadelphia, PA; New York, NY; Boston MA, with a few more potential stops along the way. The tour is bringing together communities and energizing and supporting local campaigns. A variety of activities are planned at each stop, including free open boat tours, non-violent protest trainings, codmmunity meetings, and candlelight vigils.
Pollution from coal-fired power plants is responsible for 13,200 deaths, 20,000 heart attacks, 217,600 asthma attacks, and 1,627,800 lost work days a year. And coal-fired power plants are the largest single source of global warming pollution in the US.
The Coal Free Future ship tour is just the beginning—all around the country, people are organizing, protesting and speaking out against coal, and now Greenpeace is prepared to join that movement, and take on the coal industry in the greatest struggle of our time. The Coal Free Future Project
Greenpeace's Coal Free Future Tour is not associated with Jeff Bigger's, Ben Evan's and Christa Faulkner's wonderful Coal Free Future Project. Their website describes the project:
"Incorporated as a fiscally sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a non-profit arts service organization, the Coal Free Future Project is a unique collaboration of award-winning American artists—writers, actors/theatre director, filmmakers and musicians—who have come together to combine their long-time experiences in the clean energy, anti-coal and climate justice movements to create performances and workshops that inform and inspire action around a simple but basic truth in our lives: It’s time to envision a coal free future and work toward clean energy independence."
The Coal Free Future Project website is well worth checking out.
