The Wind: Leading the Way to the Renewable Energy Revolution

Renewable energy is the key to breaking our addiction to the fossil fuels that cause global warming and perpetuate our reliance on foreign oil interests

Feature story - March 28, 2003
Even though both wind and solar energy emit zero global warming emissions, and would create jobs throughout the U.S., the Bush Administration proposes only minimal investments in clean renewable energy. This is not surprising given the corporations that funded Bush's rise to the Presidency, like ExxonMobil, that aim to keep the U.S. addicted to fossil fuels, putting profits over the health of our planet. President Bush would rather see a new fossil fuel plant be built every week for the next thirty years -- which was what the Bush Administration's Energy Task Force calls for -- than invest in clean renewable energy.

Renewable energy is the key to breaking our addiction to the fossil fuels that cause global warming and perpetuate our reliance on foreign oil interests. This is not surprising given the corporations that funded Bush's rise to the Presidency, like ExxonMobil, which aim to keep the U.S. addicted to fossil fuels, putting their profits over the health of our planet. Renewable energy, like wind and solar power, is the fastest growing source of energy in the world. Wind energy grew by 31% last year, and is now cost competitive with the cheapest, dirtier sources of. Solar energy is also dropping in price. Greenpeace has been successful in convincing cities and universities to use solar energy and energy efficiency to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and energy bills.

Some of the best sites in the world for wind energy lie just off the coast. Offshore wind power is a growing source of clean energy that will provide millions of homes with clean, affordable, renewable energy. The choice is simple, do we continue to follow the Bush Administration as it needlessly destroys the environment, or do we choose Clean Energy Now?

Renewable energy can also help to end our addiction to imported oil and the conflicts that addiction creates. Renewable energy can be used to create hydrogen, which even President Bush calls the fuel of the future. Hydrogen can be use in a fuel cell, which generates electricity and water. Electricity from a hydrogen fuel cell can then be used to move a car or power a house. Renewable energy and hydrogen fuel cells can end our addiction to both fossil fuels and imported oil, stopping global warming and avoiding military conflicts.

Our Clean Energy Now! Campaign works with cities, schools, labor groups, and concerned individuals to bring clean energy on line immediately.
