Bumble Bee Foods’ new brand of canned tuna products a step in the right direction: Greenpeace

April 25, 2013

25 April 2013 (San Francisco) –

Bumble Bee Foods announced at the Brussels Seafood Show that the company will introduce a new “Wild Selections” brand of Marine Stewardship Council certified tuna products to U.S. markets. In response to the announcement, Greenpeace USA Senior Seafood Markets Campaigner Casson Trenor said:

“Bumble Bee is a leading force in the US tuna sector, but the company’s hypocritical position can’t be ignored. Chris Lischewski, the CEO of Bumble Bee, states on one hand that introducing a more sustainable product into the US market is a ‘natural step’ in the company’s trajectory, but on the other hand he isn’t addressing how it plans to tackle its massive Bumble Bee brand tuna. Bumble Bee needs to take a leadership role by making real change — not just adding a product for the positive press, but actually changing the way it does business and reducing its impact on the oceans by abandoning the use of fish aggregating devices.”
