Washington, DC- In response to the news from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration that it is extending its comment period for Atlantic seismic testing by 15 days, Greenpeace USA Climate Campaigner Mary Sweeters said,

“The move by the Trump administration to extend the comment period for Atlantic Coast seismic testing is the direct result of widespread outcry from people along the East Coast and from bipartisan political leaders. Seismic testing and offshore drilling will harm East Coast communities and their economies, destroy the Atlantic marine environment, and jeopardize a clean-energy future. East Coast communities have made it clear for the second time in less than two years that offshore drilling is a no-go. People in this country are ready to move forward with renewable energy and leave the short-sighted interests of oil and gas executives behind. The Interior Department should cut the nonstop meetings with the fossil fuel industry and instead listen to elected officials from both sides of the aisle and the communities who want to stop seismic testing before it begins.”
