Washington, DC- In response to the U.S. Senate’s final confirmation of David Bernhardt as Deputy Secretary at the Interior Department, Greenpeace USA Climate & Energy Director Kelly Mitchell said,
“Every Senate vote for David Bernhardt as Deputy Secretary at the Interior Department was a vote for corporate ownership and control of our public lands and waters. Senators who want to clear their conscience should support federal ethics agencies in demands that David Bernhardt recuse himself from all issues associated with his work as a lobbyist. Bernhardt is ethically compromised on issues ranging from national monuments to offshore drilling; we expect timely recusals from these decision-making processes.
“People in this country worried about Yellowstone National Park looking like a fracked wasteland or the Atlantic coast turning into a minefield of oil rigs can still demand transparency and accountability. David Bernhardt is prepared to execute the agenda of this former oil and gas clients, but he will meet a resolute resistance ready to defend everything from the Endangered Species Act to access to safe drinking water.”
