“Today the Obama EPA made a bold move to confront corporate polluters by regulating carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act. Greenpeace knows the polluters will fight back hard as they have tried to stop this day from happening for over a decade. This fight will identify the true nature of the opposition to climate action and test the meddle of the Obama team,” said Kert Davies, Research Director for Greenpeace USA. “Now we need the President to make up for lost time.”
During the EPA announcement today, Greenpeace activists unveiled a huge banner in front of the White House that displayed an image of Obama and the message “Lead. Save the Climate!”. Obama’s image was formed with the names of over 50,000 Americans who have signed a Greenpeace petition calling for leadership from President Obama to solve global warming.
“The ruling underscores the critical role the EPA can and must play in the effort to avert catastrophic climate change,” said Kyle Ash, Senior Legislative Representative of Greenpeace USA in Copenhagen, “The President can move to implement greenhouse gas regulations under the Clean Air Act beyond the weak targets of congressional legislation.
“Other governments at the Climate Summit should now expect President Obama to commit in Copenhagen to announce much deeper cuts by 2020 in greenhouse gas emissions when he comes here next week.”
