Washington, DC-In response to the first meeting between Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Trump at the White House this afternoon,  Greenpeace USA Executive Director Annie Leonard and Greenpeace Canada Executive Director Joanna Kerr released a joint statement and said:

“The united resistance against the Trump administration crosses global borders. The majority of the people in the United States and Canada are committed to defending the rights of Indigenous Peoples, including those impacted by the Dakota Access pipeline and the ever-expanding web of water-poisoning tar sands pipelines crisscrossing the continent.

In his rush to escape Trump’s wrath on trade, Prime Minister Trudeau shouldn’t ignore all those he has claimed to champion: immigrants, Indigenous Peoples, women, the LGBTQ community and the young people whose future is at risk if we don’t act on climate change. Prime Minister Trudeau has an opportunity to show that he is on the right side of history by using this first meeting to stand up to Trump and his divisive politics. Trump has already cemented his place as a dangerous obstacle to progress, but the people will overcome.”
