Greenpeace Opposes Neil Gorsuch as Supreme Court Justice

Judge's love for corporations, voting restrictions, and rolling back protections make him bad for people and the environment

Washington, D.C.

In response to Senate consideration of Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch, Greenpeace U.S. Democracy Campaigner Rachel Butler said:

“Throughout the Senate hearings, Neil Gorsuch showed why his confirmation would be another Trump-born disaster for the American people. His practiced evasion of specifics or substance on case law or his own record show a disregard for a public that deserves to know the motivations of a lifetime appointee. As both lawyer and judge, Gorsuch made a career of dismissing the complaints of people facing real harm at the hands of corporations, seating him squarely in the Trump tent, next to all the the other cronies looking to detonate our institutions and clear the way for big business. Senators who serve the people should know that the American people are with them in rejecting Neil Gorsuch.

“Climate deniers and corporate front groups like the Koch Brothers and the Heritage Foundation, which have pushed for Gorsuch’s confirmation, would be happy to see their vision realized in a Supreme Court Justice. Gorsuch’s alarming affection for voter suppression, unrestricted campaign spending, and nondisclosure suggest a vision of the United States where working people no longer have a say in their government. And his position on the Chevron deference, to the right of even his mentor Antonin Scalia, suggests that Gorsuch would undo the standing separation of powers that permits government agencies to enforce laws protecting us and the environment.

“The people of this country see the deep threats to the rights of minority communities, LGBTQ people, working families, and the environment that Gorsuch represents. We see that he will be cog in the Trump agenda to eviscerate the EPA’s authority and allow the oil and gas industry to lay waste to the climate. We see the long term threats to our constitutional rights that he poses. The nomination of Neil Gorsuch is an effort by Republicans and the corporations they serve to erode the gains we have made for ourselves and our children to live safer, more equal, free lives. We will resist that with all we have.”
