Senate Energy Bill Locks Us Into a Fossil Fuel Future

The Senate Energy Bill would expedite long-term fossil fuel projects and usher in a new era of loose federal oversight on safety and health of communities across the country.

Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) have introduced Senate Bill 1460, The Energy and Natural Resources Act of 2017. Greenpeace USA Executive Director Annie Leonard joins dozens of other environmental groups in a request for the Senate to vote “no” on this bill.

Gas flares from a well in the Bradford County countryside. "Flaring" is a term used to describe the burning of natural gas from a well that has not yet been linked to a pipeline. When a well is flared, a huge flame lights up the sky, reaching higher than tree tops, accompanied by a noise similar to a 757 jet engine.

Oakland, CA- “The Energy and Natural Resources Act amounts to a massive giveaway to desperate players in the coal, oil, and gas industry. At a time when the US should be a global champion of innovative clean energy technologies, this bill props up outdated and uncompetitive fossil fuel projects. The world has a narrow window to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. The Senate must listen to what the majority of people in this country want — a just transition to renewable energy and an expedited retreat from fossil fuels,” said Greenpeace USA Executive Director Annie Leonard.
