Washington, DC- Standing Rock and Native Nations will lead a march in prayer and action in Washington D.C. today to protest the Dakota Access Pipeline and the Trump administration’s disregard for indigenous rights. In solidarity, Greenpeace USA Executive Director Annie Leonard said:

“The strength and courage of the water protectors at Standing Rock has inspired people around the world. They have brought indigenous rights and sovereignty to the forefront of the fight against injustice, and they have pushed back against the power of the oil and gas industry at a time when resistance is critical.

Greenpeace is honored to support the Native Nations Rise March in Washington, D.C. We stand in solidarity with the hundreds of Nations that have come together this week, and the thousands of people across the globe, calling on leaders and institutions to respect Indigenous sovereignty and the rights of Indigenous people to protect their home and environment.

The Dakota Access Pipeline is a violation of human rights. Millions of people across the planet bear witness to the courage and the determination of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. The Dakota Access Pipeline, the Keystone Pipeline, and all fossil fuel infrastructure projects will face unrelenting opposition because of their violation of the rights of Indigenous people, their abuses of environment and their cost to our public health. These pipelines only make billionaires richer and keep us hitched to yesterday’s energy source. Meanwhile the people closest to their impacts disproportionately pay the price of a catastrophically altered climate, unbreathable air, and undrinkable water.

We will continue to stand with our allies and resist this with all of our power. We will continue to build the future the world wants and challenge every ruling, every rubber-stamping, and every poor decision that stands in the way of justice and progress.”
