PHOTOS: Brutal Police Clampdown on environmental protesters in Istanbul, Turkey

by Cassady Sharp

An activist holds a placard reading: 'For The Right To Live For Freedom Of Speech. I'm @Gezi', in Gezi Park. Greenpeace condemns the brutal police clampdown on the Gezi Park protest and defends the right to peaceful protest. What started as a simple peaceful protest against the destruction of an iconic, and historic, park by Taksim Square, to make way for a shopping mall, has grown into a wider struggle for Turkish democracy. A question of whether the country puts people and natural environment before commerce and profit.
