Protestors march the streets, holding a banner reading, "Hold the Big Polluters Accountable." Typhoon survivors and civil society groups in the Philippines succeeded in convincing the Philippine Commission on Human Rights to investigate Exxon and other major polluters for their contributions to climate change.

In response to Judge William Alsup of the Northern District of California dismissing the complaints brought by the cities of San Francisco and Oakland against five fossil fuel companies, Greenpeace USA Climate Liability Campaigner Naomi Ages said,

“Judge Alsup is letting fossil fuel companies off the hook for selling a product that they’ve known for decades was dangerous. As the devastating impacts of climate change worsen every year, communities are turning to the courts to ask for help.

Cities like Oakland and San Francisco are demanding that fossil fuel companies pay their share of the damages that oil and gas are already causing. The courts can and should order the companies to pay those costs, even while communities continue to demand that state and federal governments take action on climate.”
