Greenpeace USA Congratulates Greta Thunberg, Named Time Magazine “Person of the Year”
In response to Time Magazine naming Greta Thunberg as “Person of the Year,” Greenpeace USA Executive Director Annie Leonard said:
“Greenpeace wholeheartedly congratulates Greta on Time’s recognition of her bold, inspiring work. This is an incredible honor for her, as well as for the climate activists around the world who have raised the alarm about the urgency of the crisis. Greta as “Person of the Year” puts her squarely in this tradition of unlikely heroes doing extraordinary things, which is exactly what we need around the world to stop the climate crisis. This recognition can only help further inspire the millions of people who have taken up the call to end the era of fossil fuels for good in the next decade.
“In a short time Greta Thunberg and the youth movement have, by peaceful protests and simply pointing to science, managed to inspire and unite millions of people around the world fighting the climate crisis, and put pressure on politicians and companies to take action to protect the planet.
“Greta has inspired young people around the world to demand a reckoning. Now, it’s clearer than ever that it’s time for our leaders to pick a side: are they with the people demanding a change, or with the fossil fuel CEOs wrecking the planet and our communities? The future of the planet and its people depends on our leaders heeding the movement’s call and stopping the climate crisis.”
