Today, the House Natural Resources Committee Chair Raul Grijalva and several of his colleagues introduced the Ocean-Based Climate Solutions Act of 2020, a comprehensive and ambitious piece of legislation that leverages the ocean’s potential in the fight against climate change.
The Act focuses on implementing a full suite of ocean-based climate solutions while bolstering frontline communities most at risk from climate change, increasing the resilience of ocean ecosystems, and helping put the United States back in a leadership role in the global effort to fight the climate crisis.
In response, Greenpeace USA Senior Oceans Campaigner Arlo Hemphill said:
“Protecting 30 percent of our oceans by 2030 is critical if we hope to restore America’s rich ocean ecosystems and mitigate the worst impacts of climate change. The Ocean-Based Climate Solutions Act of 2020 outlines an innovative and ambitious plan to couple this ocean protection with a new generation of Blue Economy jobs and a renewed, climate-ready vision for our nation’s fisheries. This is an inspiring piece of legislation, and exactly what the U.S. needs right now.”
