New reports of Trump administration’s ‘official withdrawal’ from Paris Climate Agreement / UNFCCC – Greenpeace response

November 4, 2019

Washington DC, November 4, 2019 — Greenpeace today condemned the Trump administration’s formal notification to the United Nations that the United States is withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement. Greenpeace USA Executive Director Annie Leonard said:

“By withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement, the Trump administration is turning America from a global climate leader into a global climate deadbeat. As wildfires burn and storms surge, millions of people have been taking to the streets to demand their leaders tackle the climate emergency caused by burning fossil fuels. The renewable energy industry is growing exponentially. Common sense energy progress will continue with or without Donald Trump. He can’t cancel a multilateral treaty signed by nearly 200 sovereign nations, but he can keep America stuck in the fossil fuel past while China and other nations become 21st-century leaders.

“Trump’s isolationist stance at this critical moment in history is morally reprehensible, but his attempt to derail global progress on climate change will fail. The Paris Agreement will remain in force, with or without the US government. The transition to clean energy will continue.

“Trump is an out of touch huckster selling out America — and the world — for profit. It is up to each one of us to protect each other, to fight for each other, and to resist the ways in which populism and regression harm our planet.”
