Big Oil and the Twitter Political Ad Ban

In response to Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey’s decision of banning political ads, Greenpeace Senior Climate Campaigner Caroline Henderson, says:

“By banning political ads, Twitter and its CEO Jack Dorsey have signaled a willingness to stand up to special interests. The question is whether they will allow Big Oil to continue its disinformation crusade. After spending millions of dollars to fund decades of climate denial, fossil fuel companies like ExxonMobil are now running deceptive ad campaigns portraying themselves as climate leaders. At the same time they’re expanding fossil fuel extraction and fighting tooth and nail to lobby against climate action.

Left unchecked, Twitter’s new political ad ban will allow Big Oil’s greenwashed tweets to flood our feeds while barring environmental organizations from promoting real climate solutions like the Green New Deal. If Twitter wants to lead on combating disinformation it needs to ban the king of disinformation: the fossil fuel industry.”
