In response to President Trump’s tweet about delaying the election [1], Greenpeace USA Democracy Campaign Director, Folabi Olagbaju said:
“Donald Trump and his Republican allies are coming to the realization that they can’t win a free and fair election, so they’re ramping up their work to dismantle democracy before our very eyes. To be very clear, the November general elections should not be postponed.
“Under the Trump administration, we have faced a continuous battle for our humanity and our rights. If the November general election is tampered with and Trump stays in office, without a free and fair election by the people, it will spell disaster for us all, especially Black and Brown communities, as well as our environment.
“Trump has worked tirelessly to discredit key reforms such as universal vote-by-mail. Trump himself, his family, and numerous government officials have chosen to vote-by-mail regularly over the last years. Vote-by-mail, extended early-in-person voting, and no-excuse absentee ballots with prepaid postage expand access to voting and provide more fair representation of the people. These things must become a permanent feature of our electoral process at local, state, and federal levels and can’t fall subject to Trump’s false claims. A healthy democracy is a precondition to a healthy environment and that means we need a fair election for all people.”
