Millions of people are blocked from participating in our democracy because of racist restrictions on voting rights and the corroding influence of corporate money in politics. Our democracy should be our best tool for advancing climate solutions, but it has been hijacked by fossil fuel interests. The reforms in the For the People Act will be a major step in fixing what is broken in our democracy.

In response to the reintroduction of the For the People Act (H.R.1), a comprehensive democracy reform package, Folabi Olagbaju, Greenpeace USA Democracy Campaign Director, said:

“Millions of people are blocked from participating in our democracy because of racist restrictions on voting rights and the corroding influence of corporate money in politics. Our democracy should be our best tool for advancing climate solutions, but it has been hijacked by fossil fuel interests. The reforms in the For the People Act will be a major step in fixing what is broken in our democracy, by getting polluters’ money out of politics, restoring voting rights and offering new protections for voters, end gerrymandering so that electoral districts are fairly drawn, and returning power to the people.

“As a result, we will see a domino effect, with rapid progress on the issues we care about most, climate solutions that protect the environment and expanding affordable healthcare, to passing fair labor laws and creating millions of good-paying jobs. Americans made it clear that they want a system of government that reflects their true interests. People across the country recognize that we must demand a democracy by and for the people. We must deliver on the promise of a more equitable economy and democracy rather than be controlled by polluting corporations. The time is ripe for transformative change.”
