A picture’s worth a thousand words

Feature story - May 28, 2010
Greenpeace invited whale enthusiasts and environmental activists to submit creative photos to show President Obama that people are serious about saving the whales. And, we were blown away by the response! People of all ages, from all over the world have responded.

As shocking and horrible as the news was that the Obama Administration is supporting a deal that would re-open commercial whaling for the first time in over two decades, the outpour of support and activism was just simply amazing.

Without further delay, the three winners of the Photos to Save the Whales contest are:

1. Darlene K, Houston, TXF

winner

2. Brittney S, West Liberty, KY

whales contest winner #2

3. Jennifer S, Aptos, CA

whale contest winner #3

In addition to this inspired photo contest, activists showed their love for whales by creating origami whales, taking action online, customizing whale postcard petitions, tweeting and spreading the word on Facebook. Over 150,000 GP supporters have already taken action.

What's next? On Thursday, June 3rd, at noon, Greenpeace will deliver all the petitions, photos and postcards directly to the White House. We'll combine your messages with those from other organizations that also work to help save the whales. The White House is going to see, first hand, that Americans love and support whales not whalers. If you're in the DC area come join us in Lafayette Park (directly in front of the White House).

Greenpeace's delivery event is happening just before the International Whaling Commission's annual gathering. They'll meet in just a few weeks to vote on changes to the international ban on commercial whaling. Let's hope the Obama Administration hears our collective voices and votes for the whales, not against them.

Stay tuned... there's more to come!
