During a season that is supposed to be about joy and new beginnings, we need to look at ways to build a future where workers have safe, gainful employment that provides our communities with clean air, water, and energy.
Statement by Janet Redman, Greenpeace USA Climate Campaign Director, on the ExxonMobil oil refinery explosion in Baytown, Texas:
“Our hearts break for the community of Baytown and especially those injured in this morning’s explosion at the ExxonMobil oil refinery. Today’s tragedy underscores the dangers that workers and communities face from the fossil fuel industry. Horrific explosions, leaks, and fires are the most dramatic illustration of the kinds of harm and damage the industry perpetuates every day. During a season that is supposed to be about joy and new beginnings, we need to look at ways to build a future where workers have safe, gainful employment that provides our communities with clean air, water, and energy.”
The climate crisis is not some far-off future. It is here and it is responsible for the water crisis in Arizona, the record heatwaves in the Pacific Northwest, and deadly storms like Hurricane Ida.
Over the weekend, a massive spill leaked at least 126,000 gallons of oil from a broken pipeline connected to an offshore drilling platform about five miles off the coast of Orange County, CA.
“The infrastructure and budget bills are a once in a lifetime opportunity for Sen. Kelly, Sen. Sinema, Sen. Coons, Sen. Tester, Sen. Hassan, and Sen. Manchin to invest in a just transition to renewable energy, racial and economic justice, and working-class communities.”
