About Greenpeace MENA
Greenpeace Middle East and North Africa (GP MENA) is an independent environmental organization working to protect the environment and address the impacts of climate change across the region. This region is our home. We combine science, storytelling, and advocacy to preserve biodiversity, promote sustainable practices, and advance climate justice. Rooted in local realities, we amplify voices, empower communities, and engage stakeholders to build a greener, fairer future for all.
To strengthen our storytelling and bring this vision to life, GP MENA is seeking talented podcast scriptwriters to help craft emotionally resonant, culturally rooted environmental narratives for our new podcast series. This role is key to shaping how we connect with audiences across the region, not through lectures or facts alone, but through stories that feel personal, familiar, and deeply human.
Background
Greenpeace MENA is launching a new Arabic-language podcast that tells climate and environmental stories from the heart of our region — human-centered, poetic, and emotionally resonant. Each 5–7-minute episode blends personal reflection, cultural memory, and ecological awareness into a warm, thought-provoking narrative. This is not a scientific lecture — it is a whisper, a memory, a breath of climate reality told in our voice, our music, and our language.
Objectives of the Assignment
To deliver emotionally engaging and culturally rooted scripts for podcast episodes that:
- Tell climate and environmental stories from a personal, human angle.
- Evoke memory and emotion through language, music, and storytelling.
- Reflect the lived experiences of people in the MENA region, especially as they relate to nature, climate change, and daily life.
- Incorporate cultural references such as songs, sayings, or family anecdotes to connect deeply with listeners.
Scope of Work
The scriptwriter(s) will be responsible for:
- Writing compelling Arabic scripts (5-7 min each, ~700–1000 words) based on proposed episode themes.
- Adapting or proposing episode ideas that align with the concept, tone, and voice of the podcast.
- Providing suggestions for the production team to incorporate voice cues, ambient sound design, and intro/outro elements.
- Ensuring a cohesive narrative arc with clear emotional pacing.
- Using a conversational, poetic tone—closer to spoken word than formal radio.
Deliverables
- A total of 8–10 finalized podcast scripts in Arabic will be produced under this assignment.
- Each contracted scriptwriter will be assigned a specific number of episodes (to be agreed upon at the contracting stage).
- Each script should be delivered in Word/Google Doc format, with notes for sound cues or voice tone (as needed).
- Revisions (max. 2 rounds per script) based on editorial feedback.
Podcasts Themes
- Climate and daily life: How heatwaves, rising costs, and weather shifts affect families, emotions, and relationships.
- Cultural memory and sustainability: Stories of grandparents and traditions that practiced sustainability before it became a modern term.
- Food and land: Changing flavors, farming practices, and the intimate connection between soil, agriculture, and identity.
- Health and the body: The impact of pollution on human health — including a focus on how environmental toxins affect girls’ bodies from the womb through puberty
- Loss and resilience: Disappearing species, changing landscapes, and the emotions of environmental loss.
- Love, family, and community: How climate intersects with everyday joys and challenges — weddings, parenting, waiting, and dreaming.
- Eco-anxiety and hope: Reflections on uncertainty, choices about the future, and the possibilities for change.
Guidance for Writers
- The writer is encouraged to weave in local culture, music, proverbs, songs, and personal memories to create a narrative that feels intimate, rooted, and relatable.
- Writers are welcome to propose additional themes or adapt existing ones, as long as they remain aligned with the podcast’s vision and storytelling approach.
- All scripts must feel genuine and human-centered. Use of AI-generated content is not permitted, as authenticity and emotional depth are central to this project.
- Scripts will be written in the local dialect of the writer, while ensuring clarity and accessibility for a broad Arabic-speaking audience.
Eligibility
This opportunity is open to multiple writers from the MENA region such as Egypt, the UAE, KSA, Jordan, Lebanon, Tunisia, and Morocco. Applications are welcome from both individual consultants and creative agencies with relevant experience.
Qualifications
- Proven experience in creative writing and storytelling. (Podcast scripting is a plus).
- Deep understanding of MENA cultural context and sensitivities.
- Ability to write with emotional depth, simplicity, and resonance.
- Familiarity with climate/environmental issues is required.
