Datang’s failed coal chemical initiative and the story of China’s coal chemical sector
China has a need for gas. Richly endowed with coal resources, China has relied on the
“black gold” for much of its energy needs, with 66% of its energy consumption coming from coal burning in 2014. However, rampant air pollution and other harmful environmental problems, coupled with the government’s desire to diversify its energy resources, have led China to pursue other sources of energy aggressively.
