At the United Nations Environmental Assembly in March 2021, governments officially adopted a mandate opening negotiations for a global, legally-binding plastics treaty to address the whole lifecycle of plastics.
The negotiations for the Global Plastics Treaty started in November 2022, with the goal of completing the process by the end of 2024. The future treaty has a huge potential to put the world on a path towards a plastic-free future but it will be up to us to ensure that it delivers on its promises.

A strong global plastic treaty means ensuring a holistic approach to ending the plastic pollution crisis:
- creating strong legally binding commitments to ensure compliance from governments and industry
- Keeping oil and gas in the ground, and protecting our climate;
- Big brands switching to refill and reuse systems and reducing single-use plastic pollution;
- Holding countries accountable for managing their own waste and ending waste colonialism; and
- Governments working to ensure a just transition for workers and the health of the most affected communities.
Tell world leaders to champion a strong Global Plastics Treaty during upcoming negotiations so that we can finally turn off the tap and end the age of plastic.
