Greenpeace Africa (GPAf) is seeking a Media and Communications Consultant to strengthen its communications work in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) with a special focus on forest protection, environmental justice, and community resilience in the Congo Basin.
The consultant will support both national and sub-regional work by producing high-quality communications outputs, building strong media relations, and amplifying Greenpeace Africa’s campaigns based on sharp narrative understanding and deep knowledge of the DRC media ecosystem.
This role requires a proactive, strategic communicator who can translate complex environmental issues into compelling, audience-friendly stories.
Objective:
The consultant will be responsible for:
- Delivering communications and media outputs for Greenpeace Africa’s Forests Campaign and related projects in the DRC.
- Strengthening GPAf’s visibility and credibility within national and regional media.
- Ensuring clear, consistent and strategic communication aligned with organisational objectives.
Key responsibilities
Strategic Communications
- Provide strategic guidance for campaign communications at national and sub-regional levels.
- Contribute to the design and implementation of communications strategies for campaign projects.
- Ensure that project narratives are locally relevant, fact-based and aligned with GPAf’s messaging.
Content Development & Delivery
- Produce high-quality content: reports, Q&As, press releases, briefings, talking points, human-interest stories and digital materials.
- Coordinate production of communications materials, ensuring timely delivery and adherence to budget.
Comms Consultant TOR- DRC
Media Relations
- Build, expand and maintain strong relationships with journalists, media outlets and editors across the DRC and the Congo Basin.
- Proactively pitch and place stories in national and regional media to support GPAf campaign objectives.
- Manage reactive communications and support response work during key moments.
Media Monitoring & Insights
- Conduct media monitoring, analyse trends and produce regular media analysis.
- Provide monthly and quarterly insights feeding into GPAf’s broader communications reporting.
Comms Consultant TOR- DRC
Internal Coordination
- Ensure smooth and timely internal communication with Engagement, Campaign and Communications teams.
- Support cross-departmental collaboration to align outputs and maximise impact.
Required skills & qualifications
- Degree in Journalism, Communications, Media Studies or equivalent experience.
- Strong knowledge of the DRC and Congo Basin socio-political and media landscape.
- Excellent written and spoken French; good working knowledge of English.
- Proven experience in journalism, media relations, public communications or advocacy.
- Strong understanding of communications strategy and campaign-based messaging.
- Previous experience with international organisations preferred.
- Outstanding communication, writing and networking skills.
- Understanding of the media landscape in the Congo Basin and in the global.
Team
The candidate will be working very closely with our Campaign teams, Communications team as well as the overall Engagement department team members.
Scope of Work
Media and Communications Consultant will work on an hourly basis. The total of work hours will not exceed 40 hours a week, but could be extended depending on the workload. The payment will be adjusted according to the work hours spent weekly, and will be approved by the Director of Communications on a monthly basis.
