Job Title: Global Communications Lead – Ummah for Earth Project

PROJECT’S SCOPE

The Ummah for Earth project is an innovative and experimental endeavor aimed at contributing to the creation of a climate movement in the Muslim world by exploring Islam as a vector of engagement and mobilsation. The project will be implemented by an Allyship regrouping several Greenpeace offices and allied organisations.

OVERALL PURPOSE

The overall purpose of this job is to lead on the development and implementation of effective global communications strategies to promote the Ummah for Earth project and ensure maximum impact. The job holder will have to provide guidance and support to our allies and other Greenpeace offices globally to ensure consistency across various channels in order to realize the project’s communications and engagement objectives. 

SCOPE:

The post holder is line managed by the Project Leader and will have to develop the global communications strategy for the Ummah for Earth project and execute it for GP MENA.  The incumbent will have to collaborate with the project’s stakeholders from Greenpeace International,  other Greenpeace offices and allies to realize the project’s communications objectives and curate a vibrant cluster communications community.  

The responsibilities require considerable independence and initiative from the post holder. Decisions made by the post holder impact the overall success of the global project.

RESPONSIBILITIES

PROJECT COMMUNICATIONS STRATEGY Lead on the development of the project’s global communications strategy with our allies and relevant comms officers from other Greenpeace offices. Coordinate and support the development of the national project’s communications strategies in relevant Greenpeace offices and develop the national communications strategy for Greenpeace MENA.

IMPLEMENTATION  Coordinate and provide support and guidance to our allies in implementing jointly agreed project’s communications strategy and plan. Lead on the implementation of the project’s national communications strategy for Greenpeace MENA.

RELATIONSHIP BUILDING AND NETWORKING Build and maintain relationships with key media influencers, including the news media and bloggers who are relevant to the project, as well as key communications stakeholders in Greenpeace offices, Greenpeace International, and our ally organisations. Attend meetings and conferences where networking opportunities exist and maximize these for the benefit of the project.

RESPONSIVE COMMUNICATION AND RAPID RESPONSE In conjunction with the Project Lead, coordinate communications responses with relevant stakeholders to external events or incidents that offer opportunities and/or threats to the project.

MONITORING AND TRACKING Set up real-time monitoring across relevant communications streams (traditional and social media) to identify opportunities for reactive media relations and campaigning, as well as the project’s impact on relevant public conversations. This will be particularly important in the MENA region.

WRITING AND EDITING Prepare and/or edit blogs and press materials, including press releases, Q&As, backgrounders, and features, where necessary. 

PROJECT ENGAGEMENT STRATEGY Contribute, in partnership with Project Digital Lead, to the development and implementation of the project’s global engagement strategy and the national engagement strategy in MENA, to ensure consistency and alignment with the project communication strategy.

GREENPEACE MENA COORDINATION Coordinate with Greenpeace MENA communications and the digitaldepartment to ensure smooth and coordinated usage of Greenpeace MENA channels and resources and alignment with Greenpeace MENA objectives. Coordinate additionally with the communication and digital departments of other involved Greenpeace offices.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE

Experience & Education:

  • A minimum of 5 years of significant professional experience in Communications
  • A proven track record of developing & delivering successful communications strategies including the ability to formulate and implement a comms strategy solely, and within teams and to bring creativity in the identification and exploitation of media opportunities
  • Graduate or Postgraduate degree (Masters) preferably in communications or journalism.
  • Good media/journalist connections, especially in the MENA region

Functional Competencies

  • Strong verbal  communication skills in Arabic and English
  • Strong copywriting skills in English and Arabic (e.g.: the ability to write press releases, blog posts, key messages, etc)
  • Good understanding of the global and regional Media media landscape and trends
  • Strong editorial judgement & ability to respond to the media quickly
  • Project management and the ability to coordinate with external allies/Greenpeace offices/project
  • Knowledge and/or experience in public engagement (mobilization of people)
  • A good understanding of the MENA region and of the Islam faith & culture
  • French and additional languages are a plus
