The wait is over. Yesterday, our environmental movement across Africa got a little bigger. We are proud to announce that Greenpeace Africa has officially opened its doors in Port Louis, Mauritius. Our Executive Director, Dr. Oulie Keita, led the launch event, alongside key government leaders, including the Junior Minister of the Environment, Solid Waste Management, and Climate Change in Mauritius, Mrs. Joanna Marie Bérenger. We are excited to begin this new chapter. This is a historic milestone that marks our organisation’s first physical presence in an island nation in Africa.
Why we are making Mauritius our new home
Mauritius is an island that is as beautiful as it is vulnerable to climate change, and it is situated right at the heart of the Indian Ocean, the second most polluted ocean in the world. From rising seas to pollution (particularly from plastic), these threats pose a direct risk to Mauritian fishers, families, and youth who depend on it. We are here to join the people on the frontlines to protect what matters.
With the High Seas Treaty just days away from entering into force, our arrival in Port Louis could not be more timely. Being based in Mauritius gives us a front-row seat to ensure that these global promises become real action in the Indian Ocean. We believe that the power to protect our oceans belongs to the people who have lived in harmony with the ocean for generations. That’s why we are partnering with Mauritians to ensure that their voices are heard loud and clear on the global stage. Together, we will defend our ocean from industrial greed and protect and ensure it is preserved for present and future generations.

A movement is only as strong as its people
As an independent organisation, Greenpeace Africa does not accept any money from corporations or governments. Everything we do is almost entirely supported by ordinary people like you doing the extraordinary. Our presence here in Mauritius is an invitation to you all, to be a part of this movement that seeks to:
- Defend our oceans in the face of the climate crisis.
- Push for stronger marine conservation policies and science-backed action.
- Demand stricter enforcement against polluters and promote sustainable alternatives.
Together, let’s learn, grow, and work to secure a more peaceful and livable future for ourselves and the generations to follow.
Greenpeace Africa is launching in Mauritius to learn, grow and join a community of people working against ocean and coastal threats, plastic pollution, the climate crisis and to protect natural habitats.
