A Greenpeace East Asia investigation has found that a total of 155 coal fired power plants, or four per week, have received environmental permits in the first nine months of this year. With power generation from coal falling, and an already severe overcapacity problem, the coal fired power plants will do nothing but add debt burden and idle capacity. If they do go into operation, however, they would have significant environmental and health impacts. Greenpeace East Asia calls for an immediate ban on issuing permits to new coal-fired power plants.
