Ahead of COP30 in Belém, Brazil, Greenpeace South Asia wrote to Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Environment outlining key priorities for the country’s climate negotiations. The letter calls on Sri Lanka to assert a strong, principled position that reflects its reality as one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable nations while facing a deep debt crisis. It urges the government to demand grant-based climate finance, meaningful and accessible Loss and Damage support, accountability from polluters, and reforms to global climate finance systems that currently deepen inequality. The letter also highlights the importance of protecting community rights, indigenous knowledge, food and water security, and Sri Lanka’s proven traditional solutions. We’re re-affirming that there can be no effective climate action without debt justice and people-centred climate solutions.
