Environment Affairs Minister Edna Molewa has passed away at the age of 61. Happy Khambule, Political Advisor comments:

‘Minister Molewa, was a true climate champion in South Africa and in the international community. Her desire to address environmental issues has set a precedent. In her quest to contribute to global efforts to address priority threats, she provided vision and leadership, this is best displayed by her unwavering determination to continue the climate change negotiations beyond the 2011 Durban conference.

Her continued inspiration is visible in the department of environmental affairs and her leadership is clearly acknowledged in the governing party’s national structure. She leaves a deep legacy, a legacy of engagement that we as Greenpeace Africa will be holding up as a beacon.

May she rest in peace and power. Lala ngoxolo mama.’
