Details: Full-time, Temporary (13-month contract, maternity leave coverage), Unionized (Four day work week, Monday to Thursday, 28 hours/week) 

Salary: $64,643 CAD per year (this amount will be prorated for partial years of service)

About the role:

Do you want to use your communications and fundraising skills to support Greenpeace’s mission for a green and peaceful future? Greenpeace Canada is looking for an experienced, detail-oriented, and creative fundraising and communications professional to join our team and strengthen income generation and donor loyalty and retention.

The ideal candidate will have a background in journalism, marketing, communications, or fundraising, a passion for the environment and social justice, and a commitment to promoting values of equity and inclusion.

Supporters are at the heart of Greenpeace and how we fund our important work. The Loyalty Officer is part of our Fundraising Team and works to inspire generosity, trust, and loyalty from Greenpeace Canada’s donors through compelling print and electronic communications.

Working in close collaboration with colleagues and our agency partner, you will develop, plan and manage direct mail fundraising campaigns to meet Greenpeace Canada’s revenue goals. You will also lead the creative direction and development of Greenpeace Canada’s bi-annual magazine for donors (Greenpeace Magazine), our annual gratitude and impact reports, and our monthly e-newsletter for 200k+ supporters. 

You will work collaboratively with external agencies and service providers to deliver projects and deliverables on deadline.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  1. Identify, edit and write stories and written content for the Greenpeace magazine, the e-newsletter, the impact and gratitude reports and for other fundraising communications aimed at building donor loyalty 
  2. Direct and work with freelancers on the design and production of donor print communications including magazines, reports, and welcome brochures; identify and select photos; commission infographics and other design elements for visual storytelling
  3. Solicit stories and content and secure sign off from relevant internal staff and external writers; coordinate translation; fact check to ensure content is accurate and meets Greenpeace Canada’s credible communications standards; ensure written and visual content considers, upholds and advances Greenpeace Canada’s commitments to justice, equity, diversity, inclusion and safety 
  4. Manage annual cycle of direct mail campaigns aimed at acquiring, renewing, upgrading and reactivating one-time donors giving <$500.
  5. Working with team members and partner agencies, identify direct mail campaign themes, develop creative briefs, conduct research, assemble materials for copywriters and designers, coordinate copy, translation and creative, and approve lives, ensuring that all annual appeal campaigns are delivered on time and within budget. 
  6. Provide input and support to the Donor Development team on direct marketing programs aimed at identifying legacy donors and soliciting support from donors with the potential to make gifts >=$500.
  7. Set up and schedule the e-newsletter on a monthly basis using HubSpot; negotiate and coordinate timing with the digital unit
  8. Prepare and oversee annual budgets for direct mail, the magazine, impact and gratitude reports, and other stewardship materials; secure competitive quotes from vendors and find or propose efficiencies to ensure projects come in on or under budget; code and submit invoices for timely payment
  9. Participate in strategic planning activities with Fundraising team members; identify opportunities to steward, engage and build loyalty with financial supporters, including events, telephone town halls, printed materials, etc.
  10. In collaboration with members of the digital fundraising team, advise on and provide support designing and implementing digital supporter journeys including welcome series, online supporter surveys, and other digital projects aimed at building donor loyalty; work with the Data Analyst to monitor e-newsletter performance and online survey responses, and use insights to optimize engagement and online supporter journeys
  11. Maintain and update style sheets and guidelines on behalf of the fundraising department; ensure accuracy and consistency of supporter communications and materials, both printed and digital 
  12. Request and coordinate the timely delivery of relevant data from the Data and Analytics team for direct mail, the magazine, stewardship reports and other donor communications 
  13. Monitor and report on revenue generated by the Greenpeace magazine and other donor communications
  14. Identify and propose opportunities and platforms to optimize the dissemination of stewardship content, informed by data and an understanding of relevant supporter audiences  
  15. Other tasks as assigned

Required skills and experience:

  • Organizational and Time Management Skills: to manage multiple projects, conflicting priorities and meet tight deadlines, while keeping others informed and on track.
  • Research and Analytical Skills: to identify compelling stories and find relevant and accurate content for donor communications from credible sources; to use data and insight to inform future decisions.
  • Technical Skills: to set up and schedule relevant emails on HubSpot; knowledge of and experience working with design tools such as Adobe Acrobat; Comfort and familiarity with CRM and email marketing software such as Raiser’s Edge and HubSpot; Knowledge of and experience using project management tools and processes. 
  • Attention to Detail: to edit and proofread English copy with a high degree of accuracy; to track expenses and costs.
  • Written and Verbal Communications Skills: to write interesting, persuasive and grammatical copy for publications and mass communications in English. 
  • Planning Skills and Flexibility: to prepare accurate budgets; to develop new approaches and advance fundraising goals and objectives. 
  • Interpersonal Skills and Team Work: to work with and foster positive working relationships with colleagues across multiple departments within Greenpeace; to function effectively within teams; to facilitate positive and constructive relationships with freelancers and vendors and to negotiate fair terms.
  • Knowledge Sharing and Innovation: to contribute to fostering a culture of excellence and innovation by actively sharing knowledge and striving for continuous improvement.
  • Language Skills: Verbal and written English proficiency is required; French language proficiency is a strong asset; Knowledge of First Nations, Inuit and Métis languages are highly desirable; Knowledge of other languages that reflect the diversity of Canada’s many communities are also highly desirable.
  • Relevant knowledge & experience: Knowledge of the overall goals and intent of Greenpeace (including policies, guidelines, programs, campaigns and project activities) is a strong asset; 3 years work/volunteer experience in journalism, marketing, communications or fundraising is required; General knowledge of environmental and social justice issues is an asset.

Candidates should understand and support the Greenpeace campaign tactics, including the use of peaceful civil disobedience.
