Nice, France – Speaking at the UN Oceans conference, Vice President of the People’s Republic of China Han Zheng gave a speech, where he said that China is actively pursuing its national ratification process of the Global Ocean Treaty (BBNJ) and supports its early entry into force and full operationalization.
Greenpeace East Asia oceans project manager Zhou Wei said:
“This is a positive signal from China. And ratification needs to happen as soon as possible. It is a matter of urgency that the Global Ocean Treaty come into effect. There is no time to wait. China’s ratification will be a concrete step both in advancing its own ocean sustainability as well as catalyzing the global process of establishing ocean protections. The Global Ocean Treaty will fill the gaps in existing marine governance, including establishing a global network of marine protected areas. This is critical to achieving the 30×30 target of protecting at least 30% of land and seas globally by 2030.”
