Beijing – According to China Electric Power News, 14 out of China’s 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities now have new energy sources dominating their installed capacity structures.
Greenpeace East Asia Beijing-based project lead Gao Yuhe (she/her) said:
“This marks a significant shift, as new energy capacity is boosting the power generation structure around China. The government’s target for additional renewable energy installations by 2025 is 200 GW, which I believe is still a conservative estimate. The potential for renewable energy development in China by 2025 far exceeds this target, and the actual installed capacity will most likely surpass it.
“In particular, developed provinces in the eastern region, where the energy demand is high, are well-positioned to accelerate the deployment of distributed photovoltaic projects. This will enable these provinces to reduce their reliance on coal power earlier.
“With increased renewable energy capacity, it is increasingly possible that by 2025, renewable sources will meet all new electricity demand. This paves the way for China’s power sector to achieve peak emissions by 2025.”
