About the role
We are currently seeking an Oceans Campaigner in order to join our team in Athens. This role will be focusing on developing and managing an effective campaign in defense of the Oceans. The overall goal is to build the necessary alliances and generate sufficient social and political momentum within the available time frame to pressure the government into fulfilling the 30×30 commitment, a global target to protect 30% of sea areas by 2030. This initiative is part of a joint effort with WWF Greece, supported by the Oceans 5 Foundation, aimed at advancing marine conservation and ensuring meaningful implementation of 30×30 in national policy.

The job entails
- Strengthening any existing contacts between all relevant key actors (other organizations, fishermen, associations, local authorities etc) and enhancing them by reaching out and establishing new relationships. This should be reflected in a work plan/ calendar to contact key stakeholders, establish relationships with them and expand the list of potential allies.
- Desk research and communication with potential contacts across the areas where Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) do exist but also new ones are announced (namely Hellenic Trench, Ionian sea and Cyclades Islands, Aegean sea), for example NGOs, fishermen, small industries and enterprises, key associations of any kind, and any other stakeholders in the region. The list will include the existing contacts that Greenpeace has to date.
- Field visits to strengthen alliances, organize relevant events, engage other stakeholders that are supportive to the 30×30 goal.
- Work to ensure achievement of campaign objectives within the specified time and budget.
- Monitor external social, economic and political events in order to guide development and adjustment of strategic plans.
- Identify, present and propose extraordinary national opportunities with campaign added value (i.e. responsive campaigning).
- Ensure the campaign is consistent, compatible and integrated upon cooperation with WWF GR and with other functions such as communications, volunteers etc.
- Work to ensure achievement of campaign objectives within the specified time and budget.
- Work to ensure campaign objectives remain relevant to the society and engaging audiences.
- In close cooperation with GPGR Oceans Coms colleague, prepare articles, press advisories and press releases, spread the message where needed to publicize campaign activities or otherwise advance campaign objectives.
- Represent Greenpeace Greece at the relevant International Greenpeace Campaigns Meetings.
- Represent Greenpeace Greece at any relevant national (stakeholder) meetings relevant for the furthering of campaign objectives and enhancement of public discourse.
- Acts as a spokesperson on Oceans issues for the organization.
Other - Assume any other responsibilities appropriate to the role.
All travel, accommodation and per-diem expenses are covered by Greenpeace Greece.
Requirements (The ideal candidate): - Basic understanding of the role/ function of marine ecosystems.
- Excellent organizational competencies: Professionalism, Teamwork, Communication, Innovation, Creativity.
- Strategic thinking with the ability to see the bigger picture, set long-term goals, and develop effective plans to achieve them.
- Ability to analyze and interpret networks of influence, power dynamics and decision making within a specific context.
- Ability to communicate effectively to the wider public and in specific target audiences, ability to communicate to the media in an effective way.
- Strong ability to network with and mobilize people and groups of various backgrounds and positions.
- High level of adaptability in order to be able to address unexpected challenges.
- Hands-on and love “getting your hands dirty”.
- Highly self-motivated.
- Fluency in written and spoken Greek and English.
- High level of emotional intelligence and integrity.
- Good sense of ownership, responsibility and commitment to confidentiality.
