UMMAH FOR EARTH

YOUR BANK MAY BE CONNECTED TO COAL FINANCING.

Some of Malaysia’s biggest banks disclose coal exposure in their own reports, and several have helped coal power companies raise billions. Most of us have never checked what ours is involved in.

Knowing where your money goes
is just as important as saving it.

Your savings are an amanah — a trust you’re responsible for, quietly kept or quietly broken. The banks that hold those savings also lend to companies and help them raise money, and for some of Malaysia’s biggest banks that includes companies running coal plants. You don’t need to be an expert to see what’s on the public record about yours.

None of these banks report their coal exposure separately for their Islamic and conventional arms, so there’s no public evidence that one side is cleaner than the other. And several of the coal power financings we traced were sukuk, which are Islamic bonds. Being Shariah-compliant hasn’t, so far, meant being coal-free.

This isn’t just a values question. It’s our earth, and it’s us.

Greenpeace activists painted the word ‘CRIME’ on a 50-metre high cooling tower at a power plant in Dimitrovgrad, Southeast Bulgaria, to protest its toxic impact on communities and the environment.
Activists from eight countries in Central and Eastern Europe are making their voice heard together as they protest for people’s right to clean air, a safe environment and a livable climate. They come from Bulgaria, Austria, Croatia, Czechia, Greece, Hungary, Poland and Romania.
The Maritsa 3 Power Plant resumed production in 2021 after three years on stand-by, as energy prices in Bulgaria rose, to profit from state-funded coal reserve subsidies. Now that the plant is running again, it's producing illegally high sulphur dioxide pollution, as well as particulate matter air pollution, which affects people’s health.

Islamic finance should already screen this out

Some banks already screens out restricted industries. Coal isn’t on that list yet. Some banks have made partial commitments, but none have fully phased it out.

Kumar Mahant, a resident of Darri, Korba speaks of the pollution caused by the CSEB Hasdeo Thermal Power Plant (seen in the background). Putting on a N95 mask makes the situation tolerable but is definitely not the solution to the problem.

It’s already making people sick

Coal plants emit particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, and mercury. This isn’t a future risk, it’s measurable respiratory and cardiovascular harm in communities living along the plant’s footprint right now.

It’s also just a bad financial bet

As renewables get cheaper and climate policy tightens, coal assets risk becoming uneconomical before the end of their operating life.

We don’t pick your bank.
We help you see it clearly.

Checking your holdings or comparing your options isn’t about naming a winner — it’s about knowing what your money actually funds before you decide. That part’s yours.

Stewardship

Whatever you’re given to hold — money, land, a role — you don’t just own it. You answer for what you did with it.

02

Trust

A trust isn’t yours to spend carelessly. It’s something you protect, and something you’ll eventually be asked to account for.

Weighing consequences before acting isn’t a belief you either have or don’t. It’s just what paying attention looks like.
