Greenpeace South Asia is a newly established regional office which is at the initial stage of development with an interesting portfolio of the countries. GPSA’s environmental campaigns are focussed on just transition, climate change adaptation and building momentum towards more inclusive environment protection and sustainable development initiatives. 

The purpose of this role is to ensure consistency, integrity and strategic effectiveness of the Greenpeace communications output across all platforms (press, video, photo, web, radio, marketing, PR, offline). Manage and develop a highly talented, multi-skilled team of communications professionals, inspiring and enabling them to deliver effective communications campaigns on environmental issues. 

The Media and Comms Manager will lead, develop and implement communication strategies, narratives and storytelling in line with Greenpeace identity, campaign strategy, fundraising and mobilisation needs. And ensure the effective development and implementation of communication strategies that contribute to achieving specific campaign and organisation objectives. Responsible for responsive communications and strategic support to the Program Director, ensuring the effective delivery of Greenpeace’s organisational and campaign communication objectives.

Whom we’re looking for: 

Skills & Experience: 

● Demonstrated success in campaign-based media outreach, marketing, and branding, with a strong understanding of marketing and advertising techniques 

● Comprehensive knowledge of mass communication across traditional and digital media channels:both online and offline:adapted to diverse contexts aligned with Greenpeace campaigns
● Strong news sense and editorial judgment, supported by a solid portfolio demonstrating a clear understanding of news creation. 
● Proven ability to segment audiences and map stakeholders, with a clear capacity to connect global issues to local contexts. 
● Extensive network of media contacts combined with a deep understanding of the media environment. 
● Commitment to the core values of Greenpeace, combined with management experience including remote team leadership and financial oversight. 
● Comparable experience in PR or journalism with a proven editorial track record across press, video, web 
● Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with high proficiency in multiple languages
● Solid understanding of political risk analysis and its practical application 
● Excellent command of written and spoken English, along with proficiency in at least one additional Indian language 

In this role you will: 

Team Leadership 

● Foster a strong team culture and assume overall responsibility for the effective functioning of the Communications, Advocacy, and Output teams. 

● Apply domain expertise and extensive professional experience in Communications Management for Campaigning. 

● Maintain an outcomes-focused approach across communications disciplines, evaluating both efforts and results to drive continuous learning, improvement, and high-quality delivery. 

Strategic direction and editorial design 

● Advise the Program Director, in collaboration with the Mobilisation Manager, on the formulation and execution of Greenpeace’s editorial direction and communication strategy. 

● Monitor daily news cycles, analyze trends in media production and consumption, and prioritize engagement across digital channels – including social media, blogs, and online news – over traditional press releases. 

● Support media staff in developing strategic media plans and outreach for assigned campaigns and projects. 

● Ensure the media database (MRM) functions as an effective tool for outreach and engagement for Greenpeace India.

● Lead and coordinate the development of communications strategies for campaign projects, collaborating with multiple Greenpeace offices as required. 

● Oversee the implementation and rollout of communication materials to maximize exposure and engagement with target audiences, ensuring the success of Greenpeace campaigns and enhancing the organization’s profile. 

● Identify key communication channels for campaign messaging, design tailored outreach plans, and develop corresponding communications activities to achieve intended outcomes. 

● Implement monitoring, evaluation, and rapid feedback mechanisms to optimize strategies and adjust approaches as needed. 

Communication Strategy 

● Supporting the Program Director in developing and implementing GP India’s communication strategy 

● Providing editorial input into the design of any communication program, using core communication principles, audience centered-thinking and understanding of delivery across multiple platforms 

Support/ Coaching/ Leadership 

● Task manage multi-disciplinary team involved in the development and implementation of the communications strategy. 

● Delegate responsibilities to project team members and hold them accountable for delivering agreed tasks with desired quality. 

● Encourage project members and participating offices to be innovative. 

● Provide feedback on the performance of project team members to their respective line managers. 

Compliance 

● Ensure all communication materials produced by the project team and participating offices are in adherence to editorial policies and in line with the identity guidelines across all platforms, in order to ensure consistency in communication content and presentation style. 

● Develop, monitor and authorize expenditure of communication strategies within her/his responsibility, according to agreed objectives and the priorities to ensure cost effectiveness and strategic expenditure of the allocated budget. 

● Negotiate appropriate levels of budget necessary for a campaign/project with the relevant party. 

Mobilisation 

● Working with the Mobilisation manager to ensure media plans are integrated with digital engagement plans 

● Training and coaching mobilisation team members on GP’s communication, identity & editorial guidelines 

Staff Management 

● Provide line management and leadership to all team members in accordance with current management practices and policies 

● Supporting news function roles in project teams and helping manage media capacity across projects, management of non-project news and reactive media needs 

● Managing staff in project teams including developing protocols, assisting with strong messaging and establishing best practice and ensuring they are followed

● Execute any additional duties or support as assigned by the Management. 

Budget 

● Developing, monitoring and authorizing expenditure of the Unit 

External Network 

● Building and maintaining national and international networks with key allies, political fora, industry, NGOs, public and media 

● Coordinating distribution of all hard-news material to external media wires and outlets nationally and internationally 

● Liaising with press journalists and PR agencies for placement of our material on national and international media outlets.

● Representing GP India in international discussions of protocols, organisational practice 

Policy 

● Developing editorial policies & protocols in line with the identity guidelines for all platforms after seeking advice from other members of the Program Department 

● Disseminating & training program staff on the communications guidelines and policies ● Contributing to the development of editorial policies & protocols in line with the overarching brand identity guidelines and media strategies, seeking advice from other members of the Comms Department if needed 

● Upholding brand and communications guidelines and policies 

● Developing effective protocols for reactive communication in cooperation with other members in the Program Department
