Nairobi, July 19, 2024– Greenpeace Africa is supporting Kenyan farmers in a seed litigation challenging the constitutionality of the Seed and Plant Varieties Act in court. We remain committed to our food campaign and will continue to advocate for policies that prioritise the needs of small-scale farmers and promote sustainable food systems.
We have become aware of a potential protest near the court premises where the farmers have ongoing legal proceedings. While we fully support the right to freedom of expression and peaceful protest, we are worried that such actions may distract from our important campaign against the Seed and Plant Varieties Act. We are also concerned about the well-being of the court staff and how the courts might view such actions given the ongoing case. As Greenpeace Africa, we do not condone or finance any actions that may cause a breach of peace. Neither do we seek to influence court proceedings outside of the litigation process.
We acknowledge the concerns raised by various groups regarding the Seed and Plant Varieties Act and its potential impact on food security in Kenya. We believe this legislation threatens food sovereignty and farmers’ rights across Kenya. We stand in solidarity with all those seeking to ensure equitable seed access and promote sustainable agricultural practices, and we will continue to advocate for these causes through well-calculated means.
Greenpeace Africa will unwaveringly advocate for policies that protect the environment, promote sustainable agriculture, and ensure food security for all Kenyans. We will continue to do so assertively and with empathy, working with all stakeholders to find solutions that benefit both people and the planet.
