CANADA – In reaction to the Liberal party’s announced commitment to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 today, Mike Hudema, Climate and Energy campaigner with Greenpeace Canada commented:

“In a time of climate emergency we need more ambition and action from all our political leaders. With today’s announcement the Liberals are finally starting to move away from the archaic targets set in the Harper era, and are willing to make them legally binding. Setting science-based carbon budgets would be a step forward, because basic math shows that you can’t expand the tar sands and keep warming to 1.5 degrees.

If the Liberals are as serious as they say about the climate crisis, they need to be willing to cancel the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion and constrain the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions – the tar sands. So far they’ve been unwilling to do either. All parties need to listen to the millions of young people calling for action, and implement  holistic plans to create over a million sustainable jobs, meet the science and address the multiple crises we face.”
