Let’s disrupt the Liberal National Convention #LIB2021

Call out Prime Minister Trudeau and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland on their social media channels, by phone, by email (spam them for the planet!). In less than 10 days, the long-awaited federal budget will be released and it must include immediate and ambitious climate action. As the Liberal Party and its supporters gather for their national convention, let’s set the tone and make sure they’ve got their priorities straight. We are determined to be heard! We demand a federal budget that lives up to the grand statements in last fall’s Speech from the Throne: Remember when they promised to build back better for a greener, more just future? Well, we have yet to see the policies —- or the money —- to turn that promise into reality. Climate science tells us that we need to fully decarbonize our economy to protect life on earth. And we need to confront and disrupt growing wealth inequality, which has been exacerbated by the pandemic. Now is not the time for political bafflegab. Now is the time for bold climate action, for people and the planet. What we choose today will determine the world we live in tomorrow. Here are our demands.

How will we do this?

Participate in all the tactics below using the #LIB2021 hashtag!

Tactic 1: Flood the #LIB2021 hashtag on social media

For Justin Trudeau and Chrystia Freeland to hear you loud and clear, one post will not be enough. Post each day (or more!) for the duration of the convention (April 8-10).

I know that oil and gas lobbyists have met with your government 1,100+ times since COVID-19 began (that’s around 3X a PER DAY!). I hope this won’t impact the ‘bold climate action’ you promised in last fall’s speech from the throne. Just a friendly reminder that you don’t work for Big Polluters. You work for the people. I expect you to put people and planet first at #LIB2021 and #BuildBackFossilFree >>https://act.gp/3cY0lQv #KeepYourPromises @greenpeace.canada
A team of researchers has just shown that TMX could now lose taxpayers $11 billion. They are recommending that you SCRAP it because it’s no longer profitable. I hope you’re listening. As Canada recovers from the COVID-19 crisis and looks to the future, I expect to see my taxpayer dollars fund green energy infrastructure, jobs protecting and restoring nature and projects that will help First Nations communities thrive. I expect to see a wealth tax on the ultra rich who benefited disproportionately from the pandemic to pay for a #GreenAndJustRecovery. At #LIB2021 this week, I expect you to prioritize all this and more as a plan to #BuildBackFossilFree. I’m watching. #KeepyourPromises https://act.gp/3cY0lQv @greenpeace.canada
You promised to provide all First Nations communities with clean drinking water. But boil water advisories persist. You promised to protect nature by planting 2 billion trees. But they are nowhere to be found and can’t make up for logging old growth forests anyway. You promised a just transition act, but fossil fuel workers are still stuck in a dirty, failing industry. How can you expect Canadians to trust you? #LIB2021 may be your last chance to prove yourself. Justin Trudeau, #KeepYourPromises. You can’t ‘build back better’ unless you #BuildBackFossilFree. We are watching. https://act.gp/3cY0lQv @greenpeace.canada

In the speech from the throne, you promised to #BuildBackBetter for a greener, fairer Canada. I haven’t forgotten. I’m watching to see you #KeepYourPromises following #LIB2021. I want to see a #WealthTax on big polluters and those who have profited off the pandemic to fund a green & just recovery in Canada. It’s time for the ultra-rich to pay their fair share>> https://act.gp/3utLXp2 @greenpeace.canada
Chrystia Freeland, you wrote a book about how growing inequality is tearing our politics – and our country – apart. Well, COVID-19 has worsened inequality as the ultra-rich have used it as an opportunity to get richer. While essential workers and families struggle with job losses, small business closures and disappearing child care, the richest 44 Canadians have gotten $53 billion richer (just between April-October last year alone). Enough is enough. The pandemic profiteers who have exploited this crisis and also fuel the climate crisis with their lavish lifestyles need to pay their fair share of a #GreenAndJustRecovery. At #LIB2021, I expect you to be carefully discussing a #WealthTax and tax fairness laws >> https://act.gp/3utLXp2 You wrote the book. Now let’s see the policies. #KeepYourPromises

Tactic 2: Call the Prime Minister until he answers… Or leave a message and start over!

  1. A little nervous? It’s normal. Take a deep breath and take action. Climate action requires courage and we know you have it in you.
  2. Dial 1 613 992-4211 to reach Justin Trudeau Parliament office and 1 514 277-6020 to reach his Montreal office.
  3. Express calmly and respectfully why it’s urgent for our Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to take immediate and concrete measures to address the climate emergency.

Here’s a script you can use to inspire your conversation:

I know that the Liberal National Convention is currently taking place and I want my voice heard. Justin Trudeau has been promising bold climate action in the economic recovery from COVID-19, but we have yet to see the policies and the funding to make it meaningful.

At the convention over the next couple of days, I expect my government to put the climate at the heart of the discussions. Please make this an opportunity to show Canadians that you can keep your promises and put people and planet – NOT big polluters – first. I want to see funding for clean energy projects, a just transition for fossil fuel workers and a plan to restore and protect nature that includes Indigenous communities. And I want to see a well-designed Wealth Tax and tax fairness laws that will make the ultra-rich pay their fair share of a green and just recovery.

No more empty promises. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to set us on the right path. Please don’t let Canadians down.

Tactic 3: Send an email to the PM

Write to Justin Trudeau

You want to contact the PM on your own? Here are Justin Trudeau email, address and phone number

Don’t forget to be polite and respectful.  If you live in Justin Trudeau’s riding, be sure to mention that you are a constituent.
